The New York Times just published an article about mountain lions today (June 10th) that features a photo of our own Paul Houghtaling handling 39M, the downtown puma. The article talks about the return of the “glamorous killer”, a curious adjective choice except for the fact that putting the words “glamorous” and “cougar” together may help generate some twitter traffic. While it is great to see pumas given such prominence in the news, the tone of the article veers into sensationalism at times (something that happens a lot when the media reports on predators). In this case, it’s even more interesting to read the comments associated with the article, which really expose the diversity of opinions of people around the country hold regarding pumas.
